A couple years ago, I was journaling one morning, reflecting on a conversation I had with my friend Joshua the day before. Apparently it was one of those good but hard conversations because I wrote that "it was kind of hard to listen to because it’s pushing me more into the unknown...” And then I remember having this moment where I just had to remind myself that if I claim to believe and trust that God is God over what I can see and can know, then I really have to believe and trust even more so that He’s also God over what I can’t see and can’t possibly know because, "We live by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
So I closed the thought with a simple, "...but hey, You’re the God of the unknown,” and then a melody popped into my head out of nowhere that became the chorus of this song. A couple days later, the rest of the words came as I continued to wrestle with the idea of what it meant for me that God was beckoning me to trust Him more deeply with unknown situations in my life.
So thanks Joshua for a conversation that really challenged me in how I view and trust the Lord. You pretty much wrote this song, if you think about it. Also thanks Christian, Curtis, Tyler, Brad, Joelibeck, Hannah, David, Taylor, (and probably a few others I’m forgetting), for being a part of bringing an idea to life when we got to play it. You each inspired what's in here in some way so you also pretty much wrote it, if you think about it :)
Thanks also to the gracious people who sang it with us at Impact195, Rock Young Adults, the Mingling of Souls Relationship Conference at the Rock Church, and Parkside Church because it was pretty much still being written as we went, lol.
lyrics
Verse 1:
I can’t always see
What You’re doing here
But I trust You
One thing that I know
You are in control
And You are with me
Chorus:
When I can’t see
When I can’t hear
I am reminded that You are near
When the dark falls
I can still know
You are the God of the unknown
Verse 2:
Even while I wait
And as I listen for Your voice
I know You’re moving
Jesus, have my heart
My plans and all my dreams
Do what You want to with me
Bridge:
You lead me by still waters
Into Your mercy
You call me deeper and further and higher
Until I see Your glory
And when I don’t understand
Still I will follow
You light my way and You quiet my soul
As You push me towards the great unknown
