about

// Who You Are //

[January 22, 2016]

The chorus of this song came from one of those little spontaneous moments with the choir at the Rock Church in San Diego. We had been singing the chorus of Good, Good Father - “You’re a good, good Father. It’s who You are,” - and in that moment, I remember being struck in a fresh way with the reality that we get to choose to worship God not simply because of what He can DO for us (even though there are plenty of reasons to thank Him for what He does), but simply because of who He IS - faithful, loving, holy, patient, GOOD.

Isaiah 43:7 says, “…everyone who bears my name and is created for my glory. I have formed them; indeed, I have made them.”

Our chief purpose as people who belong to God is to glorify Him - to acknowledge who He is as Creator, to worship Him, to make His name known. I believe this purpose is woven directly into the fabric of our DNA; into our nature as part of our humanity, whether or not we choose to fulfill it. So this song is a simple declaration of the choice we can make - ”we worship You for who You are, and You are good."

Extra thanks to our fearless choir director Susan Gayosso for always being such an encouragement to me as a sister and a friend, and for pushing me to step out in moments like this and to “always be ready.”

PS this word, τιμή [timē], is the Greek word meaning honor.

It comes from the same verse I mentioned in the last post - Revelation 4:11, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and HONOR and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

lyrics

Chorus:
We worship You for who You are
And You are good

Verse 1:
You have done great things
Jesus, You have done great things
You took the punishment that we deserved
Became the righteousness we couldn’t earn
You are worthy of our praise

Verse 2:
You are all we need
Jesus, You are all we need
Even when the world says different
And even if our hearts grow cold
You’re still worthy of our praise

Verse 3:
You will never change
Jesus, You will never change
So no matter what our circumstances
You are faithful to the end
And You are worthy of our praise

Verse 4:
First in everything
Jesus, first in everything
Tune our hearts to seek You only
Not just the things You do
But because You’re worthy of our praise

Bridge:
We were made to worship You
We were made to worship You
We were made to worship You
It's in our nature
